Better understanding of policy impact on life courses and well being of immigrants
Improved knowledge on how the quality of life and the well being of immigrants are affected by
socio-economic factors at the macro-, meso- and micro-level over time. Changes in the stability of
life courses of immigrants will be analysed in relation to the specific socio-political and
economic context of the respective host societies. The comparison between the different policies
affecting the well being and quality of life of immigrants in the countries under study will
provide a better knowledge on the impact of these policies on the life courses of immigrants. This
understanding will also contribute to an explanation of continuities and possible ruptures in the
inter-generational "inheritance" of inequalities between individuals and socio-economic
groups.
Future Policy Development
Supplementary to existing cross-national comparisons of legal frameworks and economic contexts
relating to immigrants and ethnic minorities between different European countries, this study
provides the empirical data as yet lacking in this area. The analysis of the empirical findings
will serve as a knowledge base for future policy development. Emphasis is placed on the
development of policies and regulations related to the labour market, residence, naturalisation
and the opportunities of political participation.
Integrating political actions of immigrants
Furthermore, a clarification of the relation between the political involvement of individual
immigrants and both their life courses and the socio-economic contexts in the host society will be
offered. Information will be available on which issues immigrants and ethnic minorities are ready
to become politically involved and what factors influence their readiness for political
participation.
Transferable results
Since resources are restricted, not all European countries and not all immigrant groups are
part of the primary data survey. However, this research is designed to create transferable results
in two directions:
- Firstly those countries not included in the primary data survey will be offered the
possibility of learning from experiences the selected countries made and particularly from the
effects of their policy measures on the life courses of immigrants and ethnic
minorities.
- Secondly the results are going to offer a framework for assessing (planned) policy measures
towards other groups in the selected countries, particularly on those which arrived in the
past decade.
The dissemination of the results across Europe is going to be an important task, particularly
addressing countries with rather young immigration experience as for instance most of the
candidate countries.
Guidance for further research/ accessible database
This project aims to encourage further research in other European countries as well as other
cities in the same countries and/ or focusing on other minority groups. For this purpose and in
order to enable comparisons with the analysed groups the entire database and its description will
be made available to fellow researchers. Guidance for any further research regarding the modelling
strategies that are most likely to yield significant results will be offered.
On a methodological level, the research tools developed in this study will be discussed and
disseminated in order to encourage and facilitate similar research in countries/ cities and/or on
immigrant groups not represented in the proposed study. Safeguarded assessment of the Optimal
Matching tool and the freeware TDA for carrying out sequence analysis as well as the possible
fields of application event history analysis for post migration phases will be offered.
